Internet Addiction

http://www.mindhacks.com/blog/2007/08/why_there_is_no_such.html

Using the Internet can sometimes cause some other people who don't use to start wonder if your addicted to it. Using the internet can cause some people to start wondering if you should be outside or even doing some other things better than just sitting around looking at stuff online. Most people around you wont understand why you are just sitting their for hours staring at a screen. I know a lot of people who can sit at the computer and just stay their for hours, some friends are either on myspace, facebook or just playing online games. this doesn't necessary means that their addicted to the internet but i think its more likely to the things that the internet can offer. I myself can do all those things and i think doing it just puts you in touch with all your friends because its a way of talking to each other and having fun at the same time because you can all be playing the same game and trying to do a mission for it, or even just be on facebook and looking at other peoples profile and seeing what they have on it. But at the same time we can all go out for hours and have fun and i don't think this means that your addicted to going out but its just a way to have fun and do stuff. I think everyone who can use the internet can do this at one point but also doing this can also get kinda boring and doing it over and over again can get boring and then you just don't do it anymore. This is why some people can be on the internet for hours because they are looking for new things to try and the internet can offer this because your at home and comfortable without getting up or spending much money on things to try to find something thats fun.

Yes, I completely agree. In the end it all comes down to what each person's definition of addiction is. You believe that the activities themselves are not addicting but a sort of "fad" that eventually gets boring and fades away. I believe the same, just that spending pointless hours on the internet should not be labeled addiction.

Yes, I agree with you as well. It is just the activities that we are interested into, and when the interest fades away we stop visiting those sites, whether it is Facebook, online games, or just chatting. Since many of us agree that spending hours online just for interest and/or fun is not an addiction, then it shouldn't be labeled as an addition.
